about
Elements of smooth and rich 1960s pop and witchy psychedelia have been stirred into Rosie May’s song-craft cauldron, developing a richly dark and moody aesthetic. ‘Never Had a Plan’ indulges catchy hooks with elements of Americana with a driving rhythm section, supporting a luscious arrangement inspired by Rosie’s love of producer Lee Hazlewood. The vocal effects range from pure and intimate to sprawling and unearthly, with generous harmonies that ride the track from moody 1960s dream-pop to banshee-howling 1970s psychedelia. The band propels the track with a rich arrangement that explodes at the final chorus, driven by the collective love of 1990s grunge and Riot Grrrl.
The single is accompanied by a gloriously kitsch music video (released 17 August 2022) created with Bristol group CLUMP Collective (Katy J Pearson, Grandma’s House, Joe Lycett). The video thieves deliciously from sci-fi icon Barbarella as the protagonist Space Babe traverses the galaxy in pursuit of interspecies romance. The retro aesthetic embraces the delights of camp sexuality and dubious green-screen effects, including (spoiler) the attack of an enormous, bearded dragon.

LYRICS:
Well, I never really had a plan
When I ran away with the man who stole me
I never had a plan with the man who stole me
It was one bright night just like tonight
He grabbed my arm so very tight
He said ‘come with me, now don’t be coy’
It was then I realised he was just a boy
My sense of shame overthrown
He was there for me to call my own
My sense of shame overthrown
He was there for me to call my own
But people don’t want love
They want a plan
People don’t want love
They want a plan
I never had a plan with the man who stole me
I never had a plan with the man who stole me
Our secret night did not last long
He began to slip, he was not strong
And against all odds, I was the one
Who said to him: ‘please hold on’
But people don’t want love
They want a plan
People don’t want love
They want a plan
I never had a plan with the man who stole me
I never had a plan with the man who stole me
Well people don’t want love
They want a plan
People don’t want love
They want a plan
I never had a plan with the man who stole me
I never had a plan with the man who stole me
I never had a plan with the man who stole me
I never had a plan with the man who stole me
